What Law Office Study is

Law Office Study is a legal-education path authorized under California law and State Bar Rule 4.29. Students study in a law office (or judge’s chambers) under an approved supervisor, with reporting and examination requirements set by the State Bar.

It is demanding, supervised, and document-heavy. Credit and progress depend on meeting the State Bar’s rules — not on any private program’s marketing claims.

What we do

• We do not guarantee State Bar credit, approval, or admission outcomes
• We are not a State Bar–approved law school
• We do not replace your supervising attorney/judge or the State Bar’s Applicant Portal obligations

Participation in LOS, credit for study periods, and eligibility for examinations remain between you, your supervisor, and the State Bar of California.

Who qualifies

Students (high level)
Typically you must meet the State Bar’s pre-legal education requirements (college work or approved equivalency), register as a law student, and obtain State Bar approval for LOS study with a qualifying supervisor. State Bar rules generally require the LOS application to be submitted at least 30 days before your intended start; study before approval does not earn credit. Exact rules, fees, and timelines are set by the State Bar and can change.

Supervisors (high level)
Supervisors are generally active California attorneys in good standing who meet the State Bar’s practice/experience requirements, or qualifying California judges of a court of record. Supervisors take on real instruction and supervision duties (course outline, regular graded exams, required hours of direct supervision, attestations) and may supervise only a limited number of LOS students at once.

We can help you understand the path and provide student study aids (plans, practice exams, logs). We do not prepare or submit the supervisor’s course outline, graded examinations, or State Bar attestations — those remain the supervisor’s responsibility. We cannot decide eligibility — only the State Bar can.

How to apply as a student

1. Confirm you can meet State Bar pre-legal and registration requirements
2. Tell us about your background, location, schedule, and goals
3. We work on matching you with interested, potentially qualifying supervisors
4. You and your supervisor handle State Bar LOS application, declarations, and course outline
5. Once approved, use our optional study plans, practice exams, and logs alongside your supervisor’s instruction (your supervisor still administers and grades the required monthly exams)

1. Confirm you meet current State Bar supervisor requirements and can commit the time
2. Tell us your practice area, location, capacity, and preferences for students
3. We introduce matched student candidates
4. You decide whom to supervise; you remain responsible for outlines, exams, supervision hours, and State Bar reporting
5. Optional: use our study plans and logging tools to reduce administrative friction
